He was born in 1509 and is remembered for the amazing journeys and experiences that are described in his memoir, “The Travels of Mendes Pinto”. Through this remarkable memoir, his tales of adventure and hardship became legendary. He chronicled encounters with powerful Sultans, treacherous pirates, and noble but lethal samurai. He describes facing storms at sea, captivity, and the rich tapestry of cultures in the lands he visited.
Mendes Pinto began his journeys at the young age of 14 when he crewed a ship sailing to India. From there he sailed throughout Southeast Asia, and eventually to China and Japan where he was one of the first European to set foot on the island of Japan.
